I can't tell you anything about the series of dots, but 3797414 is the GM part number.

I would say the series of dots is an internal calendar or clock, but I do not know how to decipher it. Just a guess. Always did wonder about these markings too.

The 'circular' emboss with individual dots resembles the date coding method used on early in-line GF-48 fuel filter lid castings. Most interpret the individual dots to represent the months of a given production year that passed prior to the part being molded...
