Harmonic Balancer Interference Fit - 1960

My HB goes on fairly snug but without an interference fit. The snout has an outside diameter of 1.245 and the HB has an inside diameter of 1.2455. This extra 1/2 thousands is making it slip on.

Since I had my snout drilled for a grade 8 bolt would it be OK to install this HB ?

Should I consider using anything to keep it snug like a Loctite product ?

It was already balance with my engine so I am hoping I can still use it.

Does my crank snout seem to have the sizes outside diameter ?

It's important that the harmonic balancer be an interference fit on the crankshaft for reasons other than just retention of the balancer. Personally, I would be very reluctant to use a balancer that had, for whatever reason, lost its proper interference fit, even though you have a retrofitted balancer bolt installed.

You could use a product like Loctite anaerobic sleeve locking compound. While this would provide for an "interference-like" fit, it probably won't re-establish all of the original "relationship" between the balancer hub and the crankshaft snout.

if the damper is not a press fit on the crank snout it will "eat" out the groove in the damper where the crank key goes. i have seen this happen several times with a loose fitting damper even with a tight bolt. the new LS series engines use a slip fit damper and no crank key but they use a bolt torqued to at least 250 # ft. and they use a diamond impregnated washer between the end of the damper and where it fit against the crank face to keep it from spinning.

Thanks for your responses. I will find another harmonic balancer.
