    1970 LS5 A.I.R. question

According to Richard Prince's resto guide for '68 to '82 Corvettes, he notes that the AIR system was not used with LS5's in 1970.

He further stated that in 3 weeks of March of 1970, exhaust manifolds were drilled and tapped, them plugged with square headed pipe plugs.

The 1970 I'm working on is a March 23rd car, one exhaust manifold (drivers side) is drilled, tapped and plugeed (correct casting number), the passenger side is not - but with the correct casting numbers appear on each manifold.

Do all 1970 LS5's not come with AIR???

    Thanks for any feedback.......

NO 1970 LS-5 Corvettes were equipped with AIR. However, as Richard Prince apparently mentions, some were equipped with manifolds drilled and tapped for AIR but plugged with INTERNAL SQUARE HEAD pipe plugs. If the one manifold on your car that's plugged is plugged with this type of plug, the chances are great it's original to the car.

The casting numbers for the manifolds which were drilled and tapped for AIR were the same as those which were not drilled and tapped for AIR. Only the FINISHED part numbers, which appear nowhere on the manifold, were different.

      Re: 1970 LS5 A.I.R. question

Would it be unusual to have one drilled and tapped, and the other side not?

I haven't pulled the exhaust manifolds yet to see the dates cast into them. I was just trying to eyeball it with a mirror....and that's a bit tricky.

I would say it's unusual but, strictly speaking, possible.

For some reason most of the cars had the passenger side drilled and plugged where the driver side was not.
