    72 gas gap

Anyone have a good source for a correct 72 gas cap?

    Thanks

The best ones come from swap meets (old/tarnished) that folks buy and replate...

Been there, judges did not like it.
        Any suggestions for platers?

All 1972-74 Corvettes used gas cap GM #3994339. That cap is still available from GM and, as far as I know, is identical to the one originally used. I expect that this is the cap sold by sources like Dr. Rebuild, Paragon, etc. So, what didn't the judges like about yours?

I believe the caps that are being produced now have an "S" logo stamped into the cad on the underside. For judging the cap the circular SMC logo is correct for the 72 non-vented cap.

The only way someone is going to get that sort of nuance feature is to find an original cap. In my mind, the likely cost and difficulty in doing such a thing is not worth the points garnered.

They are out there, the key is to look for the blue and white GM boxes.

As an aside I had an oxidized original on my car before it was judged and elected to put on a shiney, new, perfectly serviceable cap, with the wrong logo on it (hindsight) for judging. Shiney is better right? It lost judging points for originality.
I found 2 NOS ones at August Carlisle on Thursday this year. So I guess I have to get it judged again. I did tell my wife the second one is for "future acquisitions". Think she'll go for it?

what exactly was the color of the original 71-72 caps anyway - the judging guide just says it was a "dull cadnium". I have seen most caps (including the obvious repro ones) which are a gold colored cadnium.

I have also seen some which the finish is more of a zinc colored finish. To me the ones that are a more zinc color do seem to be a dull finish, but I am not clear on what is meant by the "dull cadnium" description.

Did the true originals come one way (between gold or zinc colored)? Or did some originals come each way?

I know a 72 owner that had both caps under the lid so each judge could take his choice.
