I am trying to find out what color the column should be. I have been told by different people different things. One said it should be painted semi-gloss, one said satin, another said it should be powder coated. Is it paint or powder coat and if paint satin or semi-gloss?

I thought that the steering tube itself (that goes through the firewall) was a higher gloss than that (but that was a service unit I bought 15 years ago, and production may have differed).- Top

It's paint, more satin than typical semi-gloss; SEM #39143 Trim Black (aerosol can) works very well for this.- Top

Re: 66 Steering column color
David,
I know you are asking for information regarding a 1966 model, but I have included some pictures of a 1965 steering column in an unrestored car with 29,xxx miles on it. You can see the varying gloss between the steering wheel hub, steering column mast jacket and the escutcheon plate near the dash.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
James West- Top

Re: 66 Steering column color
David -- here's the rest of the story; again, locations from the Ditzler (PPG ?) 1965 chart, but the black codes are the same for 1966 MY as well. Let me finish off the the parts that have BLACK low gloss (3 deg) from yesterday's post; (cont'd)... Glove Box Frame, Linkage Cover Panel Inner (what the heck is that ?)
-- Then, for black interior cars: Headliner, Rear Compartment Inner Area. Linkage Panel Cover Outer (?)
-- Next; Full Gloss (60 deg): Used on Winshield side and upper Garnish Mouldigs. Upper Garnish Mouldings, Halo Panel, Hardtop Garnish Mouldings, Door Upper -- Inner, Kick Panel Retainer, Lock Pillar Return Flange (what's this ?) and Cap (Inner).
-----------------------------
Here's the 1966 interior refinish charts from Chev Service News. Corvette is only 2 columns (no flat [zero gloss] anywhere).
