    Disassemble Late C3 type gas cap

    I'm trying to figure out how to disassemble this locking style gas cap used in 78-79...a vapor emission control/unleaded fuel type gas cap. I drilled the rivet on the inside hoping in might loosen the assembly but unsuccessfully.

    On the inside next to the outer surface is the plastic ratcheting mechanism. You can see it from the back side of the photo.

    Anyway, any suggestions?

    I did this once on a 77 gas cap. I had to bend out the edges on the inside of the gas cap. Pried the edge up enough to get the parts apart. Had the metal parts replated then put them back together. I made a tool out of PVC tubing to put the parts back together.

      Thanks Ed...did you have to drill that rivet out at all?

        No, did not have to remove the rivet.

          I'm looking at the inside of the cap. Are you referring to the lip that runs the outer wall and if so, what and how were you able to lift it? It can't be more than 1/16"

            Yes, I used a small, sharp, flat tip screwdriver to get under the lip. Gently pry it up around the edge. Once it is up, the gas cap will come apart.
            There are two separate metal pieces and the plastic ratchet mechanism.

              Tom;

              I just found the gas cap that I did this to about 10 years ago. I don't recall there being a rivet in the center, and there isn't one now.

              The recrimping didn't work out as well as I had hoped.

              Cap has part number of 559346 and is marked NDH.

              I can send you the cap so you can see what I did.
