    Re: Shielding identification needed

The pics.posted for me (thanks Mark!!) should fit 70-74, note: these are for safety mounts, not correct for early 70 or 69, non safety motor mounts. The shields pictured are from 1972 vin #3187, 9/24/71 Build date coupe, Right shield bracket stamp "AS", Left shield, one bracket (AS), the other bracket 4 inside a square and GM part # 3973402. Since these shields are so closely aligned with the safety/non-safety motor mounts we should get the motor mount issue straight.

I'm pretty sure ALL 1970 Corvettes originally had the safety motor mounts, however there is a possibility the first half dozen or so 1970 Corvettes had non-safety mounts.

Terry, I am sure my 70 #00009 has had motor mounts replaced back in 1976 by previous owner. Could the mechanic have installed safety or nonsafety at that time, did they have that option without modifications??? Steve

Other than modifications to the ignition shielding that is the subject of this thread -- either mount will fit and function fine.

Steve, what is the build date on the trim tag of your #9? Is it A05 or something else? If it is A05 I would lean toward the safety mounts.

Terry, It has AO5 build date. I plan to pull engine this summer and wanted to keep in mine all possibilities, even though I think I could simply use safety mounts and who would ever know how they were from factory. That is why I am inquiring about interchangeability without modifications to get it correct to the best of my ability reguardless of other corvettes later produced in 1970. Steve

My best guess is that your car originally had the safety mounts installed. As you said, absent the original parts -- who would know. You are certainly better off with the safety mounts.
