    C1 engine assembly question

I was planning to install these items after I put the engine and transmission into my car.

Are there any I should install after I drop it in ?

    1. spark plugs
    2. exhaust manifolds
    3. fuel pump
    4. intake manifold, thermostat housing, carbs
    5. distributor
    6. valve covers
    7. generator and brackets
    8. shielding
    9. coil
    10. oil canister
    11. shifter and linkage
    12. starter

I am worried about damaging some of the above parts during the engine drop which is why I will do them after the engine drop.

These will be installed while the engine is on the stand:
    1. oil pan
    2. water pump/ front engine support
    3. timing cover
    4. harmonic balancer
    5. crank pulley
    6. water pump pulley
    7. oil canister by-pass valve/mounting plate

I will also replace the front engine compartment brake line and black-out the engine compartment before dropping in the engine.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Mark:

As a geneeral rule of thumb we try to install everything that we can with the engine out of the car. We look carefully at potential clearance problems as we do the installation. We also use a leveler and go very slowly.

I've never changed the engine on a C1 but it would seem that most of what you are proposing to install after the drop you could install before.

      That's pretty accurate. Some comments.

      1. Install the fuel pump plate and gasket while the engine is on the stand. Install the push rod, and hold it in place with the bolt in the front. I use a nylon 3/8" diameter bolt - about 1.5" long.

      2. Not sure when the dipstick tube should go on. It's a little tricky to install it after the engine is in. You need to hammer it in from the shoulder. There's a tool for that. But most use a wrench that fits on the shoulder, and then hammer the wrench. This is tricky after the engine is in. Not sure whether the tube is in the way when you do the engine installation. It is easier to install the tube before the exhaust manifold.

      3. You can put the intake manifold on before the install. It's not in the way.

      4. Not sure about the oil cannister. But make sure you install the bypass that goes in there.

      5. The water pump pulley and the crank pulley should be left off. The crank pulley is the gating clearance item at the front. Might as well give yourself more room. The water pump pulley is held on by the fan, and you won't want the fan in the way when you do the install.

I've had engines in and out of the 56 several times.
About the only things NOT installed on the engine before installation is:
        Valve covers
        Distributor
        Carbs (or FI unit)
Crank and water pump pulleys and fan.

I always install the engine/tranny as an assembly.

Christopher and Tom - how do you connect the lift chain if the intake and ex manifolds are on ?

            Mark -

I use Grade 8 bolts and hardened flat washers at the extreme four corners of the intake to retain the end of the four chains on a "tilter", and replace them after the engine is down.

Usually anything above the intake manifold I install after in the car to keep a chain from damaging.

John - that makes a lot of sense. That is the way I'll do it.

I was thinking I would torque all bolts to 25lbs with the chains installed.

After the engine is installed I will remove the chains and replace the 4 bolts used for the chains with the correct bolts then torque all to to 30lbs. I believe the range is 25-35lbs for intake bolts.

                  Thanks,

                  Mark
