    C2 gas cap, plating problem

    Hi.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction.
I have an original 63 "vented" gas cap that I had replated. It looked good when I got it back, but now something ( acid, I think) has leaked out of the vent hole and ruined the plating on the underside.
Do I need to dis-assemble the cap, or is it possible to get the plating redone without this end result?
    Thanks, John

Re: C2 gas cap, plating problem

    John,

I have replated gas caps disassembled and left intact. I've never had a problem plating caps without taking them apart with proper preparation. If you use a pickling solution, then it should be neutralized prior to plating. A baking soda solution works well. The part then needs to be thoroughly cleaned and rinsed out with distilled water. I actually use an ultrasonic cleaner, but it isn't necessary. Proper preperation and plating procedure should prevent any problems with the plating. I would send it back to the plater and have it redone.
