    Newbe

    Hi,
I am new to corvetts and new to the NCRS. My wife let me buy my dream car, a 1973 coup for my bday. The car only has 20k miles. How can I tell if this is acorate? I have been slowly going over the car, and so far the only things that are not original are the tires, altanator, batery, and carb. Would this be a good candidit for 'Survivor'.

    Hi Dan !

Welcome from a fellow 73 owner. Sounds like your car is a good candidate for a possible Survivor and even a Top Flight award. I would crawl around the chassis and do some investigation there. A well preserved original chassis would be a good indicator of low, original mileage.

    Post up some photos !

    Love those 73's !!

It might be a Survivor - at Bloomington.

Thanks for the info. I plan on attending Bloomington this year. One more question. It has an AIR pump on it. Do all 73's have an AIR pump, or only the California cars?

I believe all 73's had A.I.R. The system was not CA only. What is the drivetrain combo of your 73 ?

Yes, air pump. I recommend looking into a Judging Guide for this car. Take a look at the publications section on the home page. These guides are basically the gospel of your Corvette originality. Warning, the first time you read through it might be a very humbling experience.

It is a L48 with a 4speed trans. I have the Judging guide for this car, and have been looking at everything with a number or date stamp. So far it look original, except for the items I listed above.

Ok great. Sounds like you have a very nice acquisition (thanks in part to your wife). Thinking about your mileage question, tuff one. Any luck with owner history? The best way of course to have documented mileage through previous registrations. BTW mileage and wear / tear will have no bearing on "Survivor" or "Bowtie". The best advice is don't change anything.

The person that I got the car from got it from someone in Vegas that owed him money. He took the car expecting the person would want his car back and pay up. After two years, he took his loses and sold me the car. No paper work included.

                        Hi Dan,
Welcome and I'm glad you're here. It sounds like you may have a nice interesting car. (And a nice wife, too.)
Do you have a local chapter nearby? If you do, perhaps some members would be willing to take a look at your car and give some opinions about its originality.
                        Again, welcome and have fun.
                        Regards,
                        Alan

Might take a peak onto the top of the gas tank to see if a build sheet might exist. Might help start your paper trail !!

Pop the gas cap off, peel back the rubber seal and take a look in there with a flash light. Let the fun begin !

                            Daniel,
If it as nice as you say there are both Bowtie and Duntov possibilities. Nice original cars can score 97 plus and pass a PV as well as achieve Bowtie status. If you have the right car it is an interesting option.

It sounds like you found a nice car. With the carb and the alt. allready not original I would say flight judging is the way to go. In the past many cars got the Bowtie award that would fail today. In todays judging their are very few cars that will make that award left. The level of judging on bowtie cars is much higher than it was ten years ago. Today any car with over 10,000 miles has a lots greater chance at a star award than a Bowtie.
