Justin,There is only so much a fellow can do with some of these car owners. I spend 1/2 my life advising Corvette owners what to do and a good % of them just do their own thing.

I remember telling a certain 65 owner years ago that I had the original FI unit for his car. He said his car was running fine and he was not going to touch it. But I said to him. Your serial number is stamped on the plenum!!! He said he didn't give a crap as he wasn't spending anymore money on the car. So I went to plan B. Sanded the number off and restored the unit. It broke my heart to do so. I will never forget that. Some guys just don't care. Ever try talking numbers to a street rodder?(I was one for many years)
Justin I feel for you and you are to be commended for attempting to do such a good deed. But I wouldn't loose any sleep over it as the car owner doesn't realize how much more his car is worth with the original engine. I imagine the car has a lot of issues other than a CE block. Probably a real piece of work. Or maybe the poor guy doesn't have any cash. Might even be unemployed.
Try buying the car from him. JD

Jusin, I would reverse the process.
Get all of his contact information and check with him from time to time.
For a few hundred dollars, just hold on to the block.
Stuff happens, things change and he may decide to sell, if not, buy the car from his estate.

Most people don't care. It seems like only the NCRS guys care. I have a good mate who has spent 1 1/2 years on rebuilding a 70 Vette and he is about half way it's an amazing resto. It's all new but he lost me when he said he threw the original motor out because it had already been bored 30 thou, scrap metal !! I told him he was crazy and his reply, I was the one who is crazy looking for all those matching numbers and dates those NCRS guys live in there own world, pay stupid prices for cars and parts and years of research then who cares.
So it looks like we are the crazy ones !!
Most people don't care they are not fanatics they have the money to buy them but not live them. ( I'm still looking for the dates and numbers stuff him) Stewy

Mike Murray is right on. Be patient and someday you will own the car and the engine or you may sell the engine with the car to someone else. We all have different ideas about what these cars mean and sometimes not all are
smart about value.

We are a bit different, I guess, but in a very good way. The neighbors I have who do know about the cars find it strange I store parts in a bedroom, I know the VINs and birth dates, uh, I mean assembly dates. If they only knew the half of it. Hey, I have friends who named their cats Big Block and Fueler.

I have my hood in the living room standing up in the corner under a sheet.
My wife didn't like it much, but I don't think she notices anymore. Or maybe she does and is going to use it against me later
