    1964 Parking Light Wire Color?

    Hi all,

Having checked the archieves I am still not sure as to the correct wire color used for the original lamps and more importantly how the wires are crimped together. I would love to see a picture or two of a truly original 64 parking lamp and the wire crimp.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Craig W.

Craig, Look up Alan Drake! He has done a ton of research on 64 parking lamps. I'm sure he has some posts about it in the archives.

The wire colors for a 64 are white, light blue, violet, (W,LLB, PPL). If you have these colors judging will accept them . Copy the attachment and blow up the crimp area which is typical of a 64 (original from my Mar64). Note I have found early and late original 64's with the full boot around the brass light socket.

There have been some other color exceptions especially with what appears to be a transitional design with the ground wire exposed at the brass socket where it is connected by a spade style connector. These appear to be restricted to 65 & 66 cars, but the verdict is still out. The more one looks at these the bigger the problem gets! Following is a start at the various attributes these lights have.

Alan -- here's an NOS assy. (blue & white box, Bloomington '91). The light blue is REALLY light.

Plug recess groove; 1.035" (caliper measurement in the groove)
        Length of pigtail 16_13/16"
Lens screw length 5/8" fully threaded length, barely magnetic (falls from magnet if disturbed)
Lens gasket: gray; bulb 2057. Lens lettering around circumference: CRYSTAL_5950982; then 180 deg opposite: AMBER 5954440. Center: GUIDE F2-60

I realize this is not orig. '64 production, but it might help.

That's exactly what I would expect for a NOS part - just like the 3 I have purchased in early 70's from GM, however a small magnetic will not hold screw at all and gasket is black.

Sorry about formatting of information above - it looked OK before it was posted and then . .

Can the brass socket be removed from the housing or is it permanently attached?

            Thanks,
            Craig

Do you mean like this! Have not got the method perfected yet, but now that its winter I will try to build a fixture to do this so nothing gets hurt. Ahhh take an old booted 63L-64 light and put a new chrome bezel on it????
PS - that is a later NOS light (do not have history on it) with the gray gasket

Alan, can the brass fitting be removed with little trouble or is it a difficult maneuver? Yes my chrome is pitted and what a better way to replace than repair.

                Thanks,
                Craig

OK, I will make a few assumptions here. Cut the old chrome bezel off! (dremel tool here) Get the new donor light with perfect chrome bezel and cut brass connector off. Now you have one good bezel and good booted cable
Next the brass socket must have the crimp removed, insert into perfect bezel and crimp back. I plan to take some round metal stock and flare the end to put back the crimp.

My attempts to un crimp the brass socket has been fair at best and I believe a number of other members too have been unhappy with this method. Good Luck
