    Dumb oil question

I see that some guy's are using rotella t 15 40 oil, i guess because of the zinc thing, this is also the oil that my engine builder said to use, so here is my dumb question ,can we use say( synthetic 10-30 )in our older engines. does syn have the protection needed for us.

There are numerous articles in the archives on this subject. There was also a story in the summer of 2008 Restorer by Duke Williams on the subject. Let your figures do the walking.

Yes, you can use certain synthetics under certain circumstances, but the questions I would ask is why would you want to?

It's a lot of extra money for no gain.

Read the referenced article. "Synthetic" versus "conventional" or 10W30 versus 15W-40 are secondary issues in oil selection.

It's all about the API service category.

A guarantee that comes with synthetics, it will find places to leak that have never leaked before.

The last oil change on my 2001 Tahoe the mechanic advised going to synthetic. Never had any oil leaks. A few months later I spotted some oil drips on my driveway where I parked the Tahoe. Took the car in for inspection and service and needed a new manifold gasket. Not cheap. You decide.

I've been reading the board on this topic for awhile. CJ-4 is the recommendation I've seen and will use. Here's a pretty good post on the subject:
