    Re: Metal workbench top

Anyone consider a solid core door discarded from some remodeling job ? You can then cover all or part of the top with metal of your choice to beat on. This has worked for me but I'm getting ready to do another because the mover said he would have to cut it in half to get it out of the basement so the new owner was most greatful for the GIFT. Happy building whatever your choice ....................Bill #20328

my work bench is a pair of 4" steel pipes for legs with 4" x 1" channel at the bottom of the 4" pipes and similar channel at top of pipes. then i bolted the flooring out of an old bowling alley(2" x 4" tongue and groove southern hard maple) for the surface. has worked well for me for over 35 years. the hydraulic vice mounts to the steel channel and i have a piece of metal strap on the underside(where the vice mounts) where i attach the welder's ground to.i have had the maple smouldering a time or two but an ounce or two of the beast extinguishes the burn. mikie
