    1961 Clutch Return Spring Installation

    Hi,
Is there a tool to help install the return spring for the clutch? I only need to spread it about an inch to connect it but the spring is very tight and strong. The last time I had to connect one we came up with the idea of using a jack to pull the spring apart and then placed washers within the spring to hold it open so we could connect it and then pulled out all the washers (it must have been 30 washers).
    Thanks for your help,
    Jeff

The ST-12 explains how to do it correctly. Using that method, you can install one in less than a minute. I fought with the washers and tried everything, only then did I decide to read the manual. Duh, it's so easy when you follow instructions.

      Jim,

Hi, thanks for your reply to my clutch question. I assume ST-12 is a publication, but I am not sure what it is.

I believe ST-12 is referring to the Corvette Servicing Guide (by GM)available from the NCRS store. Don H.

The ST-12 method is by far the easiest. It basically is this "Slide a deep socket with a 12" extension over the lower cross shaft lever". This gives you the leverage you need.

          Good luck.
