Is there any difference in bellhousings for a 1957 fuel injected (283hp, T-10) bellhousing from other lower horsepower 1957 Corvette T-10 bellhousings? I was told there is but can find no such references. Thanks in advance, Stan

Re: 1957 F.I. (283/283) Bellhousing
Two bellhousings were in use in model year '57. Both housings have the same casting number. They differed in the mounting of the pivot stud for the release fork.
One housing takes a pivot stud with small diameter threads that installs from inside the housing.
The other housing takes a pivot stud with large diameter threads, and a hex recess for wrenching. This stud installs from the rear of the housing and is captured by the transmission, once installed. This is the housing you want.
The other housing was used, as far as I can determine, on low HP passenger car applications. There are plenty of these "out there", but you don't want one.

Re: 1957 F.I. (283/283) Bellhousing
According to my references (JM and Corvette Essentials) there was only one bellhousing used in 1957 Corvettes. It was cast iron , dated , and was part number 3733365. It also has the rear mounts which were used on passenger cars.- Top

Re: 1957 F.I. (283/283) Bellhousing
The Corvette bellhousing used the externally-installed 13/16"-16 thread allen head-wrenched clutch fork pivot stud (3729000), and passenger cars used the internally-installed pivot stud (7/16" thread, I think); that was the machining difference that created the two different housings from the same casting number.- Top
