    Tachometer repair

    I've been putting this off all winter but springs not too far off. My tach needs repair. Is it possible to lower the steering coulmn a bit and move the cluster out far enough to remove the tach or must I take the whole mess out.
    Thanks.

    John;

    Looks like you have a C2... This be the case, my recommendation would be to either remove or lower the steering column in order to get clearance. It is extremely difficult to access the back of the cluster with the column in place. Aside from clearance you run the risk of scratching things up...

    As I recall, removing the tach is a big deal, that is as opposed to the 4 little gauges.. You might need to remove the cluster in total.

    I need to replace the temp gauge on my 1963... and am not looking forward to the job... it is a real pain.

    Have fun!

      I think you will have to take the entire cluster out. You can get the cluster out without removing the steering column completly but it is more difficult.
      Replace the cluster screws with 4" legnths of threaded rod and you can pull the cluster out a little. It makes it easier to remove all the wires and bulbs. The oil line is a pain.
      You might want to remove the drivers seat to gain more room to work.

        John -

        The cluster needs to come out in order to remove the pan that carries the tach and speedo heads.
