Stuck one the side of the road!!! How do we get home???

Unfortunately my '72's resto was completed in mid october, just before the snow started falling, and my wife and I are itching to plan trips. One problem though, we realized that vette's are not easily towed. This realization came on the way home from picking the car up from the shop.

Short story...Broken belt, a towing company that wouldn't touch the car, wire ties used as a belt to get it to a friends home (Safety for the car!!!) but far from my home.

My question is; When out on the road, how is a suitible tow found???

If you are a AAA member, when you call tell them you need a flat bed and they will send one. If you're not a member you should be for that reason. Been there, done that more than once.

We are members and that's who we called. They asked if it was low to the ground (DUH!!!) and if if might scrape front or rear. When I expressed doubts they said they would not touch it.

          Lynn:
I'm sorry that you had trouble getting the help you needed. The dispatcher just didn't have a clue. If you request a flat bed they will find a tow company that has one and send it. I have had to do this on several occasions- once in Ann Arbor, MI on my way home from Bloomington many years ago at 1 in the morning! Requested a flat bed and that's what picked us up.

" If it was me I would tell my wife to get out and push "

And that's when the fight started.

Is a Roll-back when the car is loaded rear end first ?

When my C1 was loaded onto a AAA flat bed the front valance (fiberglass section under the front bumper) scraped on the bed.

IMHO Any tow operator worth his salt will know how to work around the clearance issue. I just had my 1990 Thunderbird SC flatbed towed a week ago - it has very low front & rear valances. No problem. The right driver will load it quickly and carefully and make it look easy.

Right on, Ken ! I can put a new ZR1 on a rollback with no problems. Those are as low as a car can get in the nose. A driver can always use planks and or blocks to overcome clearance issues.
