Classic Chevy 5 Speed - We beat the vibration!

Just thought I would update the NCRS Forum members in regard to my struggle and success in fixing the vibration in my 63 Coupe after installing the tremic 5 speed.

We knew that we had a problem with the fact that the transmission angle was at 2.5* down and the rear pinion was 1.7* down. In an effort to get them more parallel we did the following.

    1. We used 65 body mounts to get a little more room in the tunnel
    2. We used early Nova motor mounts to lower the engine and allow more tunnel room to raise the trans.
    3. We did use the hockey puck idea between the body and the transmission cross member to ensure that the body had no sag
    4. We placed a one inch plate between the rear-end and the cross member to change the angle of the rear pinion.
    5. We cut the "donut" at the pinion to allow us to raise it up.

The end result was the tranmission angle is now 2.1* down and the rear end pinion is at .5* up. Althought the angle are not equal and offsetting, this has eliminated the vibration and the harmonics. We are pleased that this issue has been resolved for my car.

I hope that this may help someone else that has been chasing a vibration.

    Henry,

Wow, that was a lot of work.
With regard to #3, did you leave the puck there, or just use it to check spacing?

      Patrick,

We left it in to avoid the tunnel from flexing down. The tight fit of the trans and the rotating u-joints we do not want to chance them hitting the tunnel causing a rattle and or worse the u-jpoint cutting into the tunnel. There is no additional noise or firmness in the ride because of the spacers.

And yes, this has been a lot of work...many trials and errors to come to the conclusion that we have.

        Gotcha.

Did you do it yourself, or have Jamie help you, or someone else?

This is the end of the body off that involved, Roger Gress, Jamie Hamm and myself. The end of a year and 1/2 long project. Looking forward to spring!

I knew you were working on it, of course.
I'll have to stop over when the weather clears.
That should only be two months or so.

Just curious as to where you ourchased the 5-speed and if they were any help in solving your problems? Getting ready to do that swap in a 62 and it would be helpful to know who has the best tech support.

Terry, I purchased my tranmisssion from Classic Chevy 5 speed. I work with the tech folks at Classic Chevy 5 Speed. Jim was my main contact and he was very helpful in the diagnosis of our issues. We were very pleased with the out come. The trans is awesome and worth the effort to make it work. I am assuming that your install will be easier in regard to the offsetting angles of the trans and the pinion due to the solid axle. I would highly recommend Cassic Chevy 5 Speed and Jim. Let me know how it turns out. Henry
