When We Were Young With Our Corvettes - Chapter #14

    ISAND

The famous pier at Huntington Beach, at the intersection of PCH and Main was first built in 1904, destroyed by storms in 1912, partially destroyed again in 1939, was operated by the Navy in WWII for submarine watch and again badly damaged in 1983 and 1988. But in 1961, it was one of the longest (about 1900 feet), highest and only solid concrete pleasure pier around. And it was the dream of every surfer to surf between the pilings (shoot the pier).

Great story Bill! And, as you know, only a surfer knows the feeling. But, then again . . . owning a vette is a "stoke" that is pretty close!

Living in Australia and growing up in the surf you don't want to get caught up in the reef, that stuff is worse than razor blades. Silly thing to do those barnacles are nasty. The buzz would of been great and that's what the story is about. I would of loved to be riding beside you.

Yeah it's a problem being under the rest of the world. The time is rather upside down as well. My wife want's to know why your toilets have so much water in them. And yes the water does circle the other way when we flush it. Stewy

6 foot boards used to be fun, now I'm 40 the 8 and 9 footers make more sense. I just seem to paddle and sink with the quicker boards.

                    Bill,
There's an old RT-66 episode about this very subject, they go to the beach with a long board hanging out of the 62. At the end they shoot the pier too, I think it's the same beach. I'll have to dig it out. Later Rich

---'probably not a 330, uncertain if a 426, but that is my guess. I remember the Dart 330. Got me.

                          Remember Kathryn Minner---THE little Old Lady? She was in the Dodge commercials with the line "Put a Dodge in your garage, honey." I did not realize it but when the song came about Jan was a med student and saw what he thought was a little old woman in a hot rod late one night, the idea for the song;

It's the little old lady from Pasadena

The little old lady from Pasadena
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Has a pretty little flower bed of white gardenias
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
But parked in her rickety old garage
Is a brand new shiny red Super Stock Dodge

And everybody's saying that there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard

Go granny, go granny, go granny go
You might drive a goer but you'll never lose her
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Well, she's gonna get a ticket now sooner or later
'Cause she can't keep her foot off the accelerator

The guys come to race her from miles around
But she'll give 'em a length then she'll shut 'em down
