Re: Early 63 Glovebox lock and retainer

After a few member requests, I took a few pics of my early glove box door this morning. This door came out of a '63 vert. with a late Dec. '62 build date. Note the simple pan-head slotted screw on the retainer.

I purchased the car in 1988 and the glove box door has never been apart.

    Hope this helps...

Doug, that looks identical to the glove box door on my April car. The inside retainer bracket has no chrome (raw steel) and has two holes for the retaining screw, either hole could be used but not both at the same time.

Are the Early 63 lock bezel and the 64 both the same bezel? CC sells them that way. however the Judging Manual pictures on page 27 would indicate that the 5 vertical impressions in the SS under the key are more pronounced on the E63.

Never really thought about this, but in comparing my E63 lock with the 64-67 locks available in the catalogs - I would agree. The vertical impressions on the E63 lock seem to be more pronounced.

            Gentlemen,

Here's a pic from a 13,000 roadster with the later round lock and it is clearly chrome plated with a philips head screw and lock washer. This is from an original owner 63 and has never been changed. Also my 10,000 63 had a chrome plated bezel with a chrome plated philips screw.
Enjoy, and I apologize for the slightly out of focus pics.

Oh yes, note the bezel in the above pic. It has only one hole.
Seems like the steel ones with two holes might be replacement or across the counter.

Re: Early 63 Glovebox lock and retainer

I ran across this post that addresses my glovebox retainer issue. My 3rd week March assembly has the round lock but a zinc retainer. My lock is definitely original to the car. During my last judging it was noted the retainer was not chrome but it came on with the car so I thought it was original. Does anyone have an original retainer in chrome they would want to sell?
                  Thanks

                    Steve,

Corvette Pacifica sells chromed retainers for 63 and 64-67 glove box locks. At least I think their 63 retainer is chrome plated. Their 64-67 retainer definitely is chrome plated.

The problem with their 64-67 retainer is the chrome is too nice. Not crappy, GM-quality flash chrome. Original, used flash chromed retainers and glove box locks are very to find. David Sokolowski might have some.

Steve, if you know your retainer is original, why would you want to replace it? Just because the JG says something doesn’t mean it’s correct. A judging “Guide” is just that….a guide. It’s not etched in granite. Sometimes owners fall into the trap of undoing something original and correct just because the guide says something different. Leave your original retainer on there so it can be used as a learning experience.

On a 63 there were two retainers. One chrome and one natural. As I recall the chrome retainer was used with the lock with the large chrome bezel and the natural retainer was used with the lock with no bezel. They are also different sizes.

My lock is round and original to the car 3rd week of March. When I got my car the glove box door was for the early 63 with original cut on the bottom as shown above but with some wood grain covering the silver Corvette face plate. The lock never fit correctly so I believe it may have been switched for the wood grain door and possibly this retainer. I replaced the door with Trim Parts door and everything fits good. The current retainer measures approximately 1.25 long and stamped AWT inside but it seems too long for my lock. At Regional no points off but noted that it should be chrome now looking at all this discussion not sure if it was replaced but not sure what year retainer I have.

Here’s pics of my lock on ‘63 VIN #9048. Car was restored in the 80s. Don’t know if lock is original but operates with same key as door locks and ignition.
