    C1 Engine Pull

This weekend I am removing the 350 crate motor from my 1960 together with the 1965 muncie transmission.

I plan to remove the hood, radiator/shroud/support, cooling fan, battery, alternator, headers, shifter, drive shaft, fuel pump, etc.

I plan to also drain the engine oil and the transmission oil beforehand.

I plan to follow the removal instructions on pg 6-6 to 6-7 in the 1953-1962 Corvette Servicing Guide.

Anything I should consider to make this smoother ?

I will use a leveler bar and a cherry picker and have a guy helping me.

It's benn a while...but remove the distributor and exhaust before starting to pull the engine...i hope the cherry picker has good head height....after getting the engine up and over the front grill area....it will be necessary to have your friend lift up on the tranny tailstock....i'm sure others will chime in....but thats my two cents

Mark, it sounds like you have done your homework, and touched all the bases.
I took these same steps (drain oil, etc), and of course drained the radiator, and removed radiator hoses, yet wished that I had suctioned the coolant somewhat out of the block, from thru the water pump holes.
We were pulling the engine/tranny out of my '67 with a cherry picker, trying to be very carefull to not damage fiberglass,... and then coolant started draining out all over us, tools, and the shop floor.
It's a simple step to siphon it out, and then it's out of your way. It's amazing how much coolant is left in the engine.
Good luck, and post a few pics if you get time. Ridge.
Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .

If the block drain plugs are removed, one one each side of the block, you will drain about 1 quart of coolant from each side.

          Mark,
I have done it four times in my '60. Do pull the plugs on the side of the block to drain the coolant. Battery can stay, after attaching the hoist, pull the transmission mount. Be aware that you might not be able to get it all the way to the ground after it is out. That depends on how high the hoist is when you attach it. You can be prepared for that by having something available to come down on (wood pallets or strong stand, etc). Having another person there is wise, I have done it alone but that was stupid. Good luck, Don H.

Temporarely install wood blocks under the transmission and remove the transmission cross member. This will make it easier to "tilt" the engine/trans. assembly when you pull them out of the car.

              So far, so good.

Also I'd strongly recommend placing an old driveshaft yoke into the rear of the tranny, or, at least thoroughly covering up the rear of the tranny with duct tape. If you don't, LOTS of tranny oil is going to pour out on the floor when you tilt it!
Also, place and old quilt (double thickness), a couple of blankets, and old rug or something across the front panel before pulling the engine/tranny to prevent the possibility of a scratch or damage.

                  Tom's right on the tranny.
Here's a universal transmission plug that I see offered for sale at various swap meets, for cheap $.
It measures about 5 and 1/2 inches long. Fits Muncie, Borg Warner, or common automatics.. It's sole purpose is to contain tranmsission fluids, while pulling, moving, storing, etc. Made of soft plastic. In person, it's more of an orange color, than the pinkish hue with the camera flash.
Also protects the rear seal area from bumps, while pulling engine / tranny hooked together. Worked real well on my pull-out. Ridge.

I removed the heater air intake hose the second time. The first time I crushed it (luckily not the original one!).

                          Re: C1 Engine Pull

We got the engine out. Everything went smooth. Total of about 8 man hours which is no record pace but it was our first time pulling a Corvette motor/trans. We enjoyed the process and did no damage to the car or ourselves.

That's Ian Gaston operating the lift. I'll owe him some hours pulling the body on his 59 Fuelie in the next few weeks. Couldn't imagine trying to do this job without help. I don't know how some of you pull this off.

All the help on this discussion board has been a tremendous value. Thanks everyone.

Great shot Mark,... that's what this car (Corvette) hobby was meant to be all about. People having fun working on their cars and developing friendships while sharing their automotive interests.
