    64 Ignition Shielding Placement ?

    Hi all,

Should the lower left rear ignition shielding be placed underneath or outside of the upper left side ignition shielding?

    Thanks,
    Craig W.

    sorry for the bad picture.

Craig, OUTSIDE the upper left shield. At least that's the way it's supposed to be on a 63. If you try putting it inside you have to force things together big time. John

Hi Craig, the radio section of the 64 AIM shows the verticle shield inside the horizontal shield.

        Craig,

As the horizontal shield has an opening for the verticle, I don't see any other way it could be unless you want to run the wires somewhere else.

Your pic looks correct as far as I can tell. But then again, I wear glasses.

PS. John D. must have one of those 1st design, first run, FI only 63's.

My 63 AIM shows this too. Note also the square tab sticking up on the horizontal shield is visible after assembly. i.e. the vertical edge doesn't cover it. (I think your photo is covering it)

I appreciate the help here. Why is it necessary for the tab to be visible? It seems to be neater with it hidden under the vertical shielding. I looked all through my 64 AIM and couldn't find this info. Guess I need glasses.

            Thanks all,
            Craig

Craig, Good question. Only the designer would know I guess. I agree it looks better under cover.

I you haven't figured it out already, the shields are in the Radio assy section.

Richard, thanks for the follow up. I did find it in my book but the pictures looks as if the the vertical tab is placed underneath the vertical shielding. I say this because the vertical shielding is a different color than the horizontal tab. Might just be my eyes again. Also I just noticed there is another shielding that goes underneath the horizontal pieces. I never realized it was there nor did the judges during my last 5 Top Flights.

                Oh well thanks,
                Craig

You must be talking about the spark plug shields. They are supposed to be there even without radio shielding. It's very important to have the plug shields there if the radio shields are on. If not, you'll likely burn up the plug wire boots directly in front of the center of the exhaust manifolds, i.e. the #3(lt) & #4(rt) plug boots. Gets pretty hot in there. I had that happen to me on my 283 in my '59. My #4 boot and wire melted from the heat because I had the radio shield on without the plug shield.
