LT-1 engine questions and how did he get in?

Started tearing into the engine yesterday. Do all oversize pistons have the oversize number stamped on them. I was under the impresion the engine was rebuilt at least once. I can tell it has been apart by gaskets. What can you tell me?

The blue material on the head surface certainly indicates a non-original head gasket. The original head gaskets used on LT-1 never used that material.

Haven't you ever heard someone say they thought they had a bug in their engine? Now you know what they meant, Ha! Hey, he's a beauty.

        Keith-----

The pistons installed in the engine are GM pistons. Not all GM oversize pistons are stamped with an oversize. However, I strongly suspect these are the original pistons rather than a GM replacement. Engines are sometimes rebuilt without being bored oversize and without piston replacement. It's real easy to tell, though: just measure the bore size.

The number on the piston crown is a forging number. Forged pistons of standard and over-size are usually machined from the same forged blank, so the number does not tell us whether the piston is of standard bore size or some over-size.

As Terry mentioned, the engine has definitely had, at least, the heads removed at some point. The blue residue is indicative of the installation of Fel-Pro "Permatorque" head gaskets. These were definitely NOT used in PRODUCTION---they hadn't even been invented yet at that time and even after they were invented GM never used them for any PRODUCTION engine (probably way too expensive).

Is that a roach or a cricket? And is it typical factory production?

Looks like the nuts on the connecting rod bolts have been off on the far right side. Dale

The red on the valves is rust.
This car had been parked since 1986.
How can you tell the rod bolts have been off.
I will measure with micrometer tonight. I didn't have one at home Saturday. I really expected to see a 30 over or something on the piston. But I understand these pistons being machined to size from a larger casting.

Aftermarket forged pistons of various sizes are usually machined from the same forging blank, too. However, they usually have an oversize stamped on the piston top. Sometimes GM pistons do and sometimes they don't. Standard size are usually never stamped.

Let us know what you find out on the bore size.

As Dale replied, A close inspection of rod cap nuts and main bearing cap bolts will reveal signs of previous removal and reinstallation. Steve

I thought I saw an ad on EBay for NOS cricket parts, but It was probably a spoof............crickets didn't come with side pipes.
