What's wrong with this pix....69 alt belt problem.

Cannot get the Quanta alt belt to fit over the alt pully. Tried two different belts. Even took the alt & bracket off the engine to force fit but no luck. Also the water pump belt went on very tight. Anyone have this problem before? Here are the facts in this case......

Car: 69 L89 4 Spd, No AC, No PS

    Pullys: WP - 3889372BF, 5.5", stamped steel.
    CC - 3921923BM, 6.75", stamped steel.
    Alt - 3829387-AI, 3.625, steel
Alt Bracket at engine - 3882810, cast.

See attached pix (hope they went thru). Thanks, Lynn Schwebach

    Lynn,

I believe I had the same problem a few years ago with the alt belt I got from Quantas on my '69. The belt number Quantas has is wrong. Another NCRS member alerted me to this issue. I can check later this evening to make sure it was the alt belt and get back to you.

Thanks, would greatly appreciate the help as Quanta did not seem to know of a problem. I purchased one of the alt belts from Paragon, but that shoudn't make a difference?? Lynn Schwebach

The alternator belt for your application should be GM #3871257 and be 3/8" X 54-3/4". Is that the part number on and dimension of the reproduction belt?

            Lynn,

I just checked my info and I had a problem with the water pump/idler belt, sorry about that.

Re: What's wrong with this pix....69 alt belt problem.

Thanks to everyone on the 69 Alt belt issue. I think this is the straight scoop.

Joe Lucia says the correct belt is a GM3871257, 3/8" x 54 3/4". This should work as I only need one inch (really need more if you get my drift) to clear the alt pully.

Quanta and Paragon both list the correct belt as GM3940991 at 53 3/4" which is what I have but it doesn't fit. A call to Quanta got me the correct belt but it is listed in their catalogue under 1965 belts, "Generator, 327-350hp,w/o AC".

The more I work on this car, the more I wonder if I will ever get to 94!? Lynn Schwebach

The belt may not fit, but it sure is a pretty engine!

Joe, what about the water pump belt? What should it be?
I actually never realized this belt was used. It runs between the two pulleys with no tension adjustment??? Strange.
Parragon also list the wrong Alt. belt for the '69 427 w/o PS as they get them from Quanta. I just let them know.

                    Jamie----

The captive belt was GM #3952336. This is a special belt of 31-7/8" length. You will not find it anywhere in the aftermarket and the reproduction belts are the only source. Quanta has them available in both "wrapped" and "cut" construction. I have used them both and they fit fine.

                      Thanks Joe!
So what is the proper procedure for installing this captive belt; remove the water pump pulley, or the balancer pulley?
                      Just curious.

The "secret" is this tool. Where would you find one? I have no idea. I didn't find this one; it found me.

Otherwise, remove the CRANK pulley, install the belt in the groove with the pulley as close to the balancer as possible, and pull the pulley down until the indexing extension on the rear of the pulley snaps into the balancer orifice.
