    78 Restore

I have a 78 that came from the factory w/o radio. The dealer installed a radio before delivering the car. I want to restore it back to factory original. Does anyone have any idea where I could find a instrument bezel without the radio hole or a filler plate. I also need an original 78 gas cap. Any help will be appreciated, I am just getting started at this.

    Hi John !

Wow ! Never seen a radio delete 78. I bet there was not a bezel specifically made for no radio. I would say a plate was installed over the radio area. Just never seen one to be able to help on this one. You will also have an antenna hole to deal with too if the dealer installed a radio in this car.

Does the paperwork for your car specifically show it was a no radio car ? ( Black Book lists about 1671 cars equipped like yours. Hopefully somebody here has a picture of the radio area ! )

Sounds like an interesting car !

John, look and advertise in The Driveline and Hemmings. I saw a new '78 on the lot without radio, Black/Black Leather, L-82, 4 speed in late '77. I know I will likely never see another.

Good Luck! It will be expensive-very expensive.

I have all of the original paperwork and it shows radio delete on the window sticker. Car only has 10,300 miles and everything original including the tires. Really hope to get it back to factory specs. Sound like it might be a challange.

I am still looking at all the paperwork but I have not found the build sheet yet. I don't think it is with all the stuff I got. The window sticker and dealer invoice both show radio delete. Any way of getting build sheet for St. Louis cars?

Interesting enough, 379999 is shown in the 83 edition of the Corvette Parts & Illustration catalog as a COVER, CTR OTLT except A.C. (center outlet) for 77-79 Corvettes. The lettering is consistent with the late model C3 lettering used on the back end, front plate, etc. It sold for $1.70 in 1983...but its for the A/C non-optioned models and blocked the A/C vents.

A better choice is COVER, Radio Control Hole that carries GM# 6264789 for 77-78 Corvettes and sold for $2.85. The 68-76 cover sold for $29.00 so there is a difference between early C3 and late C3. This unit is shown as blank in contrast to the non A/C option blocking plate.

Keep in mind that the 77 model got the 78 redesign.
