    1963 BW Transmission

My 1963 original Borg Warner transmission has a front bearing retainer # 3790278. This is an aluminum part that I assume is correct. Is this a BW only part?

There is a wear goove on the shaft of the retainer that is causing a new throwout bearing to not slide smoothly.

Is the 3790278 retainer available anywhere? I see that some online sources list a T-10 retainer T89C-6A as applicable. Anybody have any experience in this area?

Second question. Is there a seal related to this bearing retainer? Don't appear to have anything at present.

    Thx.

It appears (via Michael Hanson from the Archives) that the 3790278 was replaced by 604932, which was an iron part rather than aluminum.

I will try to track down one of these.

Anybody know about a seal behind this retainer?

Tom, The retainer has a gasket between it and the case and the oil returns into the case through a hole below the bearing. No seal.

          Tom,

The bearing retainer was aluminum on both the 63 T-10 and Muncie. I've never seen a bearing retainer that size made of cast. If you find one, please post the source on the board. I'd like to have several.

          Thanks,

          JR

Tom, The 604932 retainer is cast steel and is the GM replacement for the aluminum retainer. There is a TSB from GM about the very problem you are having, it's on the NCRS CD if you have one. Wait until you find one before you assemble everything. No seal as stated above, just make sure it clocked correctly as there is a drain hole that aligns with the case.

There is a discussion about this just a few days ago and a pic of the 932 retainer. They pop up on ebay from time to time.

Managed to find a replacement 3790278 in decent condition for now.

Will be on the lookout for a 932 to put on my parts shelf.

Maybe one of the transmission rebuilders will tell us if there is an aftermarket piece.

              Thanks to all.
