58 wiper shaft

My pass. side wiper shaft pops up when running wipers. I am able to take the whole thing out and put back in with ease, no their is not anything on the shaft when it comes out, only shaft, what is the easiest way to work on this, can it be pushed in and held in place, can you put shaft in from under dash and fix or is this a take out the unit from under the dash and rebuild, if so is this easy to do with some direction or send in? You probably will need a new wiper transmission on that side. You'll see that the bottom of the shaft is splined--so is the bottom spool in the transmission. If it no longer will stay in there, the spool may be hogged out.
Before you do that, though, try this 2-man job.
Have someone under the dash holding against that bottom spool center with something substantial. Then tap on the top of the shaft. If it stays in, you don't need a new wiper trans, if it doesn't, you do.
