Re: 63 frame tag
Only trying to guess why this tag would have been put there. Possibly a police department ID tag for a recovered stolen car ???????
Not much of an ID # though. Just making guesses.Tom Hendricks

Re: 63 frame tag
Hi Jimmy:
Appears to be the 70th frame provide for the 63 pilotline build. When suppliers are instructed to provide “pilotline” requirements they topically have minimum build. In A.O. Smith’s case manufacturing probably assembled 100 frames. Pilotline components were shipped to various disciplines within the corporation. The metal tag indicates fame # 70 was used for testing or dimensional auditing and later released for assembly. Pilotline frames, which were shipped directly to the assembly line, typically had the frame production sequence number stenciled on the side rail.
Have you seen other examples tagged like this ?? I'm sure many here would like to hear more info if you have it. What does the LAB. indicate ?Tom Hendricks

Re: 63 frame tag
It’s been my experience dealing with GM, along with other OEM’s, pilotline programs are intended to “prove out”: manufacturing, sequencing, dimensional audits and assembly fit/function. Components submitted are clearly identified as pilotline, if I recall, with an orange tag with part number, latest revision, supplier code number and usually stock location number. This process applies to all components including frames. Certain components are subject to vigorous testing where others, usually appearance or non-critical, are simply dimensionally audited. Some where in my archive I have several photographs of pilotline frames stenciled with “frame” sequence numbers as identified by AO Smith, no correlation to vehicle build number. For years I’ve conducted an in-formal survey of 63 pilotline cars and components. When Rockwell supplied leaf springs and stabilizer bars to St Louis for a particular pilotline program and depending on the test requirements part were identified as follows: 1. Orange ID tag 2. Metal ID tag, GM and each OEM, had an engineering specification for the information to be contained. In the case of springs: part number, latest revision, supplier code number, load, rate and material heat lot number.- Top

Re: 63 frame tag
Interesting. Sounds like we might need to get the VIN# of the 63 car this frame was mated to.Hey Jimmy....... do you have the VIN ?
