Re: Anybody Ever Saw a Perfectly Overrestored Vette?

Unless you have a time machine the debate will go on. I have two examples to share. I resored my 61 over 20 years ago, still have the same paint job on the car. It was blocked to perfection, then painted with red Lacquer. It was perfect. Several years later and today it looks like a NCRS paint job, waives. It seams the paint and prep products shrink and move with time. My 66 chevelle was also giving a similar paint job, not with lacquer and while many years later you can see some light ripples, it is much smoother. So many of those new corvette were most likely straiter than we want to believe. No one can go back in time, no one has a good memory of what the majority of corvettes looked like on their birthday, no one can duplicate the process and pictures are not always acurate, you'll never really know. Maybe check out the old route 66 CD's.

Actually, they weren't. They had ripples and waves on all the body panels below the peak line on the sides of the body as the cars were being delivered brand new off the showroom floor.
The arguement probably won't go on forever because some of the guys that were there when the 60's cars were new vividly remember what the body and paint looked like. I sure do.

My brand new 64 coupe had some pretty ugly body and paint below the peak line. (and above it too)

People that weren't familiar with, or even born, when these 60's cars were new have been in the middle of this debate for many years.

Back in 1977, when custom's were king, there was a Lady that won Best of Show at Bob McDorman's Chevrolet.
Her car was a perfectly stock 76 or 77 that was ultra finished every part on that car was over restored and highly finished. The cars name was "Orange Crush"
She beat out our 1975, Tilt Front end, Hatchback, Fuelie by 3 points.

        We were Crushed.

I know the feeling. In about 1979 or 1980, we showed a beautifully/correctly restored white/saddle 63 Z06 coupe that had more NOS parts on it than the GM warehouse in Broadview. (including an NOS 63 FI unit) Incredible car!
It was restored back to factory correct, including the random orange paint overspray on various engine components.
The body judge deducted for poor panel fit.

We were beat by a red 63 FI coupe that had a chrome/polished FI unit with a red painted plenum. Gloss black everything under the hood and the body was as straight as a Rolls Royce! Had to have 10 coats of clear over the Riverside red.
I knew there was no point in protesting. We loaded the car and went home.

I thought NCCC only allowed 3 modifications in a stock class?

Yup, that's the car. I still remember the VIN.... #15,455. As I remember, the judge deducted points because the bypass hose on the water pump was painted orange. (among other things) I think we lost by one point.

I just remembered the name of the owner of the red car. Bill Munzer.

I see Bill Stephenson in the red/white stripe shirt sitting on the side of the car in the 1st pic.
Thhat's Sherry Krughoff and my X wife with their backs to the camera in the last picture.
Did you notice the unpainted hood hinges in the 2nd shot?

Re: Anybody Ever Saw a Perfectly Overrestored Vette?

I agree with everything everybody has said about the art of restoration. It is my opinion that each person should decide for themselves how they want to proceed. It is my opinion that each of us should restore our own car(s) as we want and that everyone else should mind their own [expletive deleted] [expletive deleted] business.

If an owner (check writer) wants to over restore, well, I think that's GREAT and that is exactly what they should do. If another owner wants to make the car look more historically accurate (read that factory [expletive deleted]), then great, go for it. The last time I looked, it's a free country. If I own an original black/black L88 and I want to put a fake trim tag on it to show green as the color, flare the wheel wells, attach a TV antennae to it, and swap out the original motor with a Corvair motor...guess what...[expletive deleted] off, that is exactly what I'll do.

Listen, the point of my diatribe is this, leave it up to the individual to do as they wish. Just because it may be something you wouldn't do doesn't make any difference. There is room for everybody.

I think it is important to realize, however, NCRS has printed judging guidelines, so, if you choose to restore outside of said guidelines and then have your car judged, the results shouldn't be a surprise. I don't believe it is fair to expect NCRS to accommodate you outside of the guidelines.

                            Regards,
