    M.S.O. info.

What specific information is contained on an MSO(Manufacturers Statement of Origin)?
What ultimately happens to this document?
It seems there would be an MSO for every car, on file at the DMV of the state in which it was registered for the first time.
I bought my first new car in 1969 (corvette),but I don't really remember an MSO being in with the paper work, but I don't remember it NOT being involved either.
    Comments?
    Thanks-EJ

      EJ -

Dealers usually assume purchasers are not interested in the paper work but I have requested copies for even trucks. Indeed the MSO is submitted to the state to have a title issued to the buyer and should be the first document filed for the vehicle. Years ago the state of Maryland provided the MSO for my 67 #14403. That MSO provided the SAE horsepower and shipping weight of the car which assisted in verifying options and engine horsepower and dealer delivery.

EJ, I happen to have been lucky enough to get my 67's MSO from the Louisiana DMV quite a while back, along with other paperwork.
The MSO has the transfer date, invoice number and dealers name to which the car was being transferred to. It also has the car's serial number, the H.P. (S.A.E.) and shipping weight on it.
My 67's MSO has the 1st TITLE number stamped on it. This number is confirmed on the first TITLE that I have. The invoice number that is on the MSO is also carried over to the SHIPPERS COPY which lists all of the cars options with suggested retail and other prices, along with the serial number and the dealers name and address. On the SHIPPERS copy is the ident. number that is shown on the top right corner of the window sticker. I know that I got carried away and gave you more than you had asked for, but I was showing you how each of these valuable documents referenced back and forth to each other, just in case you didn't know.

          EJ,

Many, many years ago, I obtained a copy of the MSO for my 1962 Corvette which was originally sold in Oklahoma and that is where I bought it as well. The MSO copy was made from microfilm or microfiche, and has deteriorated significantly since I have had it. Some years back, I made a photocopy of the microfilm copy and it has held up well since then. I should have done it right away.

The MSO represents a transfer document from the manufacturer, Chevrolet Motor Division to the dealership to which it was first delivered. The document consists of one pape from Chevrolet Motor Division stating the basic information on the vehicle, the date, invoice #, serial #, shipping wt., and SAE hp. This page is signed by an official at Chev Mtr Div. in St. Louis, Mo.

An application for an Oklahoma certificate of title for a vehicle was included with the MSO and lists all factory optional equipment for the vehicle and the suggested retail selling price of each option and the total dellivered price. This document was signed by an official of the dealership and was then taken to the Oklahoma MVD for recordation and issuance of vehicle title to the owner and the lender, if any.

This is the MSO for my 70 Z28. You can see it does not prove it is a Z. The SAE HP rating only shows 350 CI. The back shows where original dealer assigned it to local dealer and then original owner. The original owner verified that he had them get the car from another dealer.
