    !956 starter

The starter on my early 57 is the 56 type with the open solenoid linkage.
My question is, is there a specification to adjust that linkage.
When starting the car the selenoid appears to engage (pull) but 9 out of 10 times the starter motor just spins. I wonder if a linkage adjustment might correct the problem? Or any other thoughs??
    Any info is appreciated.

The solenoid is a magnet pulling the piston in which in turn push's the bendix GEAR into the flywheel , the bendix gear travel is stopped at the starter nose 3/16 is the clearance between the thrust washer .
    1. The adjustment linkage needs to be adjusted so that the bendix reaches the starter end nose thrust washer .
2 or the bendix spring is weak and should be replaced
If it's in the vett now lath in the adjustment to make the bendix gear go further in to the fly wheel and if that don't work replace the bendix (weak spring)

      Bruce,
I just restored my 56 starter. Check a 55-56 service manual for passenger cars which describes the clearance between the pinion and thrust washer and how to adjust it. Your solenoid may not be working properly, perhaps the hold in winding is out.

The starter drive in the '56 starter is different (shorter or longer, I don't remember) than a '57 starter drive. I had bought a '56 starter that (unknown at the time) had been rebuilt with a '57 starter drive and every time I would go to start the car it would go zzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg and just spin. Did some research, found an NOS 55-56 starter drive and problem solved. BTW, I made the "master judge" that sold me the rebuilt starter with the '57 drive give me my money back. I think he still thinks that the '56 and '57 starter drives are the same.......

          Garry,
Your old starter sounds like mine. Although from time to time it will start the engine. After having it checked by a starter expert who said it was fine, I put it back in and same old stuff. I took it out again since a friend told me that I probably had a bad flywheel. The flywheel is fine.
          Time to buy another starter.

Bruce, mine would start on about the fourth or fifth turn of the key, but you just never knew and it sounded horrible. I think from what you have said, this is your problem. Good luck.
