    Radiator Hose

I've got a bad question that I already know the answer to, but frankly I'm hoping for a "heck no you don't have to change that belt" answer.

My 65's AC compressor belt, I just found out, as cut a groove into the radiator hose just outside of the water pump. Before I spend the 8 hours that it normally take me (to remove the fan clutch, remove the fan, remove the radiator housing, lift the radiator, and pull the hose), anyone have any thoughts for the quick/non-Top Flight/but works solution ? It's not leaking now but I wouldn't drive it again without some sort of fix.

Eventually I will fix the car, but I'm wore out from all the work on my vehicles as of late. I drive the car about 20 miles/week. It will stay parked unless there is a miracle band aid I'm not aware of.

    No hate mail please (:>)

    Thanks, Mark

    Re: Radiator Hose

I meant to say "don't replace that hose", not "don't replace that belt". Hose is the issue.

Another thing I forgot to mention: The paragon hose I'm using may have the wrong bends to it (slightly) in that in order to get my compressor belt with the right tension, that paragon belt will continue to hit the radiator hose. I'll try a different manufacturer next time.

Are you sure that belt length isn't the problem? When I had a '65 with A/C, there was plenty of clearance.

        Re: Radiator Hose

        Hi Bill,

When it seemed short, I checked with Paragon on the P/N and it came back "OK". I still didn't like it but thought I had enough clearance. Obviously not (who knows why the hose is short). When I buy a new one I think I'll go with Gates or Road Island Corvette or ....

        Thanks, Mark

A couple of band-type worm clamps on the hose may work as a shield temporarily. Every instance I've seen of belts hitting lower radiator hoses on small-block midyears was due to the lower hose being installed backwards.
