    Back of cluster help?

A friend of mine has a 1968, with a red-line tach of 5600.....Other friends have different years etc and in pulling some of these clusters we've noticed that on the back of them they have a label (about 1" x 2.5") with either an red LA or a LB and some part numbers.....

What do these LA or LB or XX sticker(s) on the back of the cluster read/mean? Anyone tell me where I might find what these mean and what the part numbers on them correlate to, regarding I believe the speedo and tach on these stickers....?

This particular 1968 had a 5600 red-line tach, but now he put a 427-435 HP engine in it and so he now wants a 6500 red line tach. So we are trying to figure out what would be correct label that would correspond to this on the back of his cluster.....regarding this sticker label.

    Thanks in Advance,
    David

    David,

They're broadcast codes to help the guys on the line identify which instrument went into which car (or appropriate cluster).

There may be a source listing them all, but I do not have it.

      Thanks Patrick,

Anyone have this Source Listing, or know where I might reference it?

We don't have a good list of these because, given its location, it is not judged.

          Re: Back of cluster help?

Is there any list that descibes the coorelation between the 'part numbers' listed on these labels and the specific Tach to be used ? (i.e. 5.5K, 6K, 6.5K)
          TIA,
          David

Does anyone have the different tach gauge part numbers, or where I could find them?

              David -

I'm sure all the cluster restorers/rebuilders have that correlation info, but I've never seen it published anywhere before.

David - I did a little (very little) research on this a while back, and this is the best I could come up with then (additional info always welcome):

                1965 - 67 Cluster codes:

                LA - 300 hp [65-67]
                LB - 365 / 375 / 425 hp [65 – 67]
                LC – 350 [65 – 67]

You also have asked about tach redlines and which ones correlate to which engine (the HP listed in the above table).

Here is my C2 redline synopsis, but I invite refinement from this expert crowd:

                redline synopsis for the C2s:

                63-66 327 - 250/300 hp - 5300

                63-65 327 - 340/360/365/375 hp - 6500

                65-67 327 – 350 hp - 6000 (early L79s may have 5300)

                65 396 – 425 hp - 6500

                66 427 – 390 hp - 5500

                66 - 67 427 - 425/435 hp - 6500

                67 427 - 390/400 hp - 6000

to trully get at the question you asked, you also need to know the other variant in the C2 cluster - the oil pressure gauge (I guess speed-minder would be another one). Here is an oil pressure gauge synopsis, swiped from a Jack Humphrey post on the old TF a few years ago:

                Oil Pressure Gauge:

                1963 All early cars= 60#, all later cars= 80# (all were SB's)

                1964 All= 80#

                1965 365, 375, 425 HP cars= 80# (all solid lifter), the rest were 60#

                1966 390, 425 HP BB= 80# with the rest being 60# (some disagreement exists)

                1967 430 and 435 HP BB= 80# with the balance being 60#
