Re: C2, C3 Fastback Window Spontaneous Collapse
I've had this happen before on a Honda Civic. Happened right after I drove into work on a cool summer morning. It usually is a result of temperature variations that contribute to a pressure difference. The glass gets stressed enough with the pressure difference and gives way. I'm not sure if tempered glass loses some of its properties with time to further contribute to this issue or it is a manufacturing defect that rears its ugly head with time. I do know glass is a fluid medium. If you look at old houses, the glass is thicker at the bottom of the panes due to time and gravity having their effect. Also, if you look at car glass, the older it gets, the more wavy it tends to get. Maybe some stress is being relieved with heat cycles or stress is added due to heat cycles. If you look at ceramic mugs and glassware, they do crack and sometimes shatter with time. How many times have you just touched a plate or glass and it broke. But with tempered glass the breakage is more violent. It is designed to break into small "rock salt" like chunks, not just crack.
