When We Were Young With Our Corvettes - Chapter #19

    not

We buy tickets, upper deck, sunny side for $1.50 each, the girls get a hand full of red carnations from the gate vendor to throw at the appropriate time and we make our way through the cross section of humanity in attendance, working our way up to our seats. It all starts at 4 PM but you always come early for the build up.

I purchased my 65 coupe back in January of 1972 for $1,575.00. it wasn't considered a collector car in those days. We had four kids and needed an extra car for obvious reasons. One month after purchase, while parked in a snow filled parking lot, someone skidded into the side and punched a nice hole in the rear fender. No problem, I just bondo'd the hole, Bought some maroon paint and walla, good as new. Around 1977 I decided to do a cosmetic upgrade and took the seats out for re-upholstry. With the seats out and a couple of boards on the floor, we took the family up to Pizza Hut for dinner. All four kids squeezed into the back under the rear window. Keep in mind they were 10, 12, 13 & 14 at the time. We didn't think twice about it. I think that was the last time it was driven for 23 years. My cosmetic upgrade was put on hold and the car sat from 1978 to 2000. With my kids all gone I decided it was time to restore the car which I finally did. Bloomington gold 1n 2000, NCRS Top Flight in 2004 at the Windsor National. Each of the four kids has driven the car with smiles on their faces but I don't let them sit in the back anymore.

This episode brings to mind my 1-1/2 years spent while in the Army down at White Sands Missle Range mid 62 through 63, only Juarez was our fun place including the bull ring. The drunk and disorderly G.I's were from Fort Bliss, and we had similar crazy times watching their newbies try to pick up strippers. They would play them along until they got a nice down payment, then disappear. No matter how hard we'd try to explain what was going to happen, they still believed some how they were different and the girl really liked them.

We drove my 63 down to the border parking lot just on the El Paso side of the bridge where it would sit untouched until the wee hours of the morning when we left to make the 50 mile trek back to the Range. We'd drive the desert road at say 100+ mph on the first long straight stretch through Fort Bliss using our high beam aircraft landing lights to watch for the 90 degree turn toward the balance of the road which wound it's way to the range contonement area at the base of the Oregon mountains.

We got to know a lot of good people down there and spent many hours in our favorite jazz bar drinking Cuba Libres. We each had our favorite entertainers too (of course) who we'd string along by telling them that we were really Cattle buyers from a ranch far up north, and that's why we couldn't come to see them more often.

            Another great installment Bill.

As a young Marine at Pendleton, I made a trip to Tijuana several times a month. The Coronas and tequila were cheap, and the UCSD and SDSU girls were plentiful. It was and probably still is a hang out for those over 18 but not yet 21 due to the relaxed drinking age in Mexico.

Which of those gals is Stacy?

              Thanks, Joel:

Stacy is the photographer in the bullring bleachers photo.
She is the gal whose shoulder I have my arm draped over, in the photo taken at the entrance of the bullring.
