update on 66 427 BB front springs.

it would apear the springs i have are BB srings with EB and #3888250. i had sold them as 327 srings but while packing them up took note of the part # on the tag. the finish under the tag is grey blue. my question is: can an original tag survive this many years? can they be told apart from new ones? i automatically assumed them (the tags)to be replacments which did not add up because the 427 blew in 72 and it has had a 327 since then so why would any one put this tag on? they have 12 coils but i mistakenly stated on my post that they were evenly spaced. when i measured today i discovered they actually do gradually change spacing. last, can springs be rejuvinated? i have a picture of my car in 71 with the BB in it and it sat higher in the front than it did after i put back in the 427.

    Bill:

Here is a pictire of a 3888250 (top) and a 3888251. The 3888250 should have a 0.600 wire diameter, be about 17 inches long and have about 12 turns.

You can see the closer spaced coils of the 3888250. If your springs look like these, they're probably right.

My 3888250 are from service, so I can't answer the tag question. (I may have removed a tag when I bought them in 1978.)

Coil springs shouldn't be stretched longer, because the residual stress after stretching will shorten their fatigue life. It's OK to shorten them by compressing them. That's done when making them.

would the rear spring in a non F41 427 be a 9 leaf? i have a fiberglass spring now and am thinking that that is why the rear sat up a bit and the front down a bit when i put the 427 in. the front was not real low just lower than i was comfortable with here in vt with our terrible roads. they do measure around 17 1/2 inches. now i have to check the shocks. they may also be the originals if the springs and tag were still this nice.

9-leaf would be standard rear. Sounds promising.

          Bill

As far as the tags go, when I ordered some repro EB tags for my '66 years ago (from Paragon or LIC) I noticed that the perforations at the ends had very pronounced and deep V's.

Comparing them to my original EB tags I noticed that the originals had perforations much more shallow and tighter, more like the pattern that would be produced by the seration on a Scotch tape dispenser.
