Torque lock sliders were mentioned a few days ago in a thread as a cure for T-10's hopping out of gear. My transmission only hops out of second. Should I install these 'sliders' for all gears? Where can I purchase these torque lock sliders? Thank you for your response.

Re: T-10
I agree. The torque lock couplers are really meant to be used on gears that have no damage. If the synchro teeth of the gear(s) has already been rounded off from grinding, or jumping out of gear, the torque lock couplers will help, but it's not really a "fix"...more like a band-aid. Using new gears, and the torque lock couplers will extend the life of the rebuilt/reconditioned trans tremendously.Joel Adams

Re: T-10
In the restorer drive line under services look for, I think, Bill Reed. The first name might be wrong. He does transmission work and claims to be able to fix the problem by working with the side cover. I have the same second gear problem with a completely rebuilt T-10 so I am interested in the results. I don't want to remove the transmission and side cover unless I know the fix will work. I don't have a phone number handy. Maybe others can give you more information to contact Mr. Reed.- Top

Re: T-10
I think you're looking for Dave Reed at (203) 631-0651. The Borg Warner jumps out of gear because the syncro isn't engaged enough. He modifies the side cover arms so the hole where the spring loaded ball goes allows it to travel further. He did mine but I'm doing a frame off and haven't tried it yet. My snycro's and gears look like new, so I didn't know what else to do. I hope he is right. You need to send the whole side cover in.- Top

Re: T-10
The sidecover fix may work, but it is a Band-Aid remedy. You need to see if the second gear engagement teeth are rounded badly (attached is a photo showing the worn teeth). Second gear is almost always the problem due to years of grinding down shifts and a few missed power shifts. If those teeth are shot, spend the $100 for a new gear and replace at least the first and second gear synchros while you're at it. This can be done with virtually no special tools but obviously you'll need to pull the tranny out. It only looks scary. The repair is fairly straight forward, just be sure to keep all of the parts organized by the order they came out. A simple T-shaped holder made out of wood works great. Write to me and I will send you a T-10 rebuild booklet pdf. Unfortunately it is a wee bit too large to attach here.
When decelerating, the helical cut gears serve to push outwards on the transmission mainshaft providing just enough extra spread to encourage the gear to let go out of the slider. Obviously, if the engagement teeth are rounded, it takes that much less to make it slip out. For extra insurance, an old timer's trick is to stake the perimeter of the rear bearing in the mid plate. A flat-nosed chisel is used to "dent" the aluminum around the rim which holds the bearing fast in the bore eliminating a few thousands of outward travel in that area.
By the way, the synchros have little to do with holding the gears in place. They act to match the speed or "syncronize" the gear that is about to be engaged to the rotating speed of the other components so that the slider meshes more easily on the targeted engagement teeth. Synchros are made of a brass alloy that wears over time and they are inexpensive, thus it is good insurance to replace them when performing an overhaul, especially the first and second synchros as they get more use and abuse.
If you want even more insurance against popping out, torque-lock or torque-lok sliders are available on the market from several sources as are all of the replacement parts. Check with D&L Transmissions in Long Island, or Ed Hartnett in PA. Sorry but I don't have their numbers handy.

Re: T-10
To add to the post, here is a picture of a NOS input shaft showing what new engagement teeth look like. This gives a idea how wore some of the old gears are. The only gear useable on mine was first because of low RPM shifting.Attached Files- Top
