    Del,

The white plastic piece, if it is what I am thinking is the center bushing that seats into the middle of the colapsable section of the shaft housing. It is about 1-1/2" long and hollow with an opening along the length to give a bit if a tension fit when installed into the housing.

I can't get the column to position correctly inside the car as I try to slide the column further in the interior. Any way I have a corvair tele column? I've seen one of those at a swap meet and it appears very similar to a 67 Vette. If so, is the Corvair column a different length? My column doesn't seem right somehow.

      Dereck,

What is happening? Can you engauge the shaft into the couple but not get the 3 mounting holes to line up with the bracket under the dash? Is the colum too short or too long???

This blowup calls out the Guide Bushing and the distance from the end of the column jacket to the bushing. It is different from 1967 to 1968.

I don't have a drawing of the Corvair steering column. But I am sure that the Corvette and Corvair columns are much different from each other.

          Jim,
Take a look at Ebay item 130304275087 that ends in two hours. There seems to be some common knowledge out there about converting a Corvair telescopic column into a 66 or 67 Corvette column. It looks very similar.

            Rich,
When I move the column into the car to properly position the clamp adjacent to the firewall the column sticks into the interior too far and the fasteners under the dash don't line up. It appears that the column is too long.

              Re: 67 Telescopic column

With a saw, welder, machine shop, and other equipment it appears that a Corvair steering column can be converted to look like a Corvette column. At least the Corvair jacket is the same diameter as the Corvette so it will fit down through the brake support bracket. I just hope that the steering shaft isn't shortened and then butt welded to convert it to the Corvette length.

If someone can supply the part numbers for the 1967 and/or 1968 Corvair steering columns, I will attempt to obtain the engineering drawings so that a close comparison of the lengths and mounting locations can be made.
