    Correct height of 66 small block

    My 66 has new springs in the front and rear. It appears that the front is to high. Can you please give me the correct distence in inches that the bottom of the fender should be above the ground above the center of the wheels. front and rear, 7.75X15 firestone tires. Is there another place to measure which would tell me what the correct height should be? How can you tell if the front springs are the correct ? I seem to get a difference of a 1/2 inch side to side.

    Shelby,

    I'm no expert, but my small block 66 measures +/-26." in front (using my eye and a measuring tape). The rear is taller - about 26.5". This is from the ground to the lip of the fiberglass running through the center of the wheel. I'm sure tire pressure, age, etc. plays into it some too. The AIM states/calls out measurements on UPC 1 page C5 - C9, UPC 3 page A6, and UPC 4 page B5.

    FWIW - I hope it helps.

      I was reading the PV requirements book the other day, and I thought it said that you had to have the car sitting level from front to back and side to side.......

        THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLYS. My 66 sets at least one inch to high in the front. The front springs were replaced in 04 buy a Corvette shop in Costa Mesa,Ca. The receipt states ft. coil springs, $109.53. along with ball joints etc. No numbers recorded. Maybe they installed big block springs. Where is the best place to buy the correct springs?

          Shelby,

          You should be able to get springs through all the usual vendors - Driveline, Paragon, Long Island Corvettes, etc.

          Good luck

            Be careful, I can't tell you how many Corvettes I see that look like they are 4-wheel drive. Many, if not all, the replacement springs just make the car too high. Front and back sometimes. When the cars are lined up on the judging field – especially when there are Bow Tie cars in the line – some of the restored cars look like clown cars they sit so high. ALL generations up to and including C3s have this issue.

            When I was a National Team Leader we were working on getting a line item on the judging sheets for ride height as a means of stopping the insanity. We settled on putting it into the PV due to pressure from -- are you ready for this -- owners who didn't want to do what was necessary to give their car the correct ride height. Sounds like BC/CC right. At the time there were no springs for early C3s that gave the correct ride height unless one fitted and cut the front springs. Then one was left with the rear in the air.

            Now the 4-wheelers will not get to the Duntov, but they can get a Top Flight because there is no place on the forms to deduct for it.

              Hello;

              Just to add to what Terry wrote.

              Measurements are in the AIM and service manual.

              Don't have one handy to state which page, but it shouldn't be hard to find.

              Hope this helps.

                I bought a set last year for my '66 small block from Corvette Paramedics in NJ (609-265-2702). I don't know who makes them but my car sits level and I've been happy with the ride and handling.
