I had an old hot rodder look at my Jasper 383 sitting on the stand today and he immediately said "that's externally balanced " .The balancer had a large section , what I'd call cut out or missing, the crank had a dowel pin for flywheel alignment and then we opened the box shipped with the motor that contains an auto flywheel and sure enough, it had a good size piece welded to it's inside perimeter. One of Jasper's performance people originally told me my '69 350/350 manual flywheel would work fine. But, when I called today, they checked the production # of that 383 and said that I would need a new flywheel for an externally balanced 400. They said, " that would not have been good " if I had used my original flywheel. WOW ! It would have be fun to discover that out after installation.
Anyway, Summit suggested a RAM 14" flywheel. Any reason not to use that brand ? Should I have the new pressure plate balanced ? any opinion on Sachs or should I go GM here Joe ?

I think the Ram 14" flywheel will be ok IF we're talking about a cast iron or steel standard weight flywheel. You can also use GM #3991469. It's about 240 bucks, GM list, though.

As far as pressure plate and friction disc are concerned, GM is not an option unless you seek out NOS. The GM pieces have been discontinued for quite awhile now. I think you'll find that a Sachs or LUK will be a very satisfactory replacement.

DEFINITELY have the flywheel and pressure plate assembly balanced before installation. It may be that little or no weight will need to be added or removed. But, you want to KNOW that BEFORE installation.

Clutch manufacturers might be in short supply -- I noticed last time I was the Wixom Performance Build center the clutches going on the LS7 Z06 engines were made by LUK. I haven't been there since they started building LS9s, so I don't know who makes that clutch.

Joe, how would one balance( in this 383 case )a flywheel from an externally balanced motor ? Doesn't that flywheel have a major balance offset to begin with ? I can see the pressure plate or a neutral balance flywheel being done.

I don't know exactly how balance shops do it, but they do it.

if the shop who did the 383 kit did the balancing correctly they should have used a stock 400 damper and flywheel and you should have to do nothing except neutral balance the pressure plate

this why if you buy a 383 short block with no damper and flywheel by a new GM one as a used one could have been modified to help balance the engine they came off of. best thing to do is get the flywheel and damper with the engine from the builder

Thanks Clem, this 383 came from the builder with a damper and an ext balanced automatic flywheel that I don't need. I ordered a Ram 14" steel for an externally balanced 400 w/ 2 piece rear main which is what Jasper claims is in this particular motor. I'm hoping it will just bolt on and only have to have the pressure plate balanced.
