Strange Stencil On 66 Inner Skirt

I bought my 66 L-72 project in 86 with a 67 351 4bolt shortblock, no heads, but all other 427 components there including the original M-21 , F-41, and 4.11 rear. I sold the 67 block and found a correctly dated 942 block and 858 heads and the car went into storage during our move from Saramento to Phoenix. I'm finally getting around to the restoration and have discovered something which I have no explanation for. On the passenger side inner fender skirt, under the blackout but on top of some blue overspray, is stenciled " Datona 4.31X 3.65 "(somebody couldn't spell).
I'm familiar with the Z-11 427 "W" engine and also the 63 Mk II "Mystery Motor", both of which used the 4.31X 3.65 bore and stroke. So what on earth is this doing on a November built 66 L-72 convertible?
I was never able to track down the original owner, but I did talk to the guy who bought it from who is believed to be the individual owner, near Palo Cedro in Northern California. The car was sitting beside a barn with the teak wheel delaminated, telescopic column, sidepipes, and a damaged left rear trailing arm and lock pillar. the engine was gone but the 427 exhaust manifolds and M-21 were there. The last registration sticker on the black plate was dated 72 and the odometer was showing just over 43k. The jack cover had a jacking instruction sticker for knock-off wheels, but when I got it, it had steel wheels for rollers. Inside the globebox was a mylar decal "Manning-McComb", maybe a dealer? The car had the obligatory California 6 tail lights and a whaletail spoiler that had a factory installed appearance instead of the typical aftermarket bondo job. When I removed it it appeared to have been attached with the same dark gray bonding mix used on the FG panels.
    Any ideas?

I agree. I don't know anything about it, but there is a cool story somewhere with this car. Keep digging and take tons of photos.

There was a Manning-McComb Chevrolet dealer in Peoria Illinois back in the 60's, could that be the selling dealer? Found it in a Google search.

          Roger,
Thanks for that reference. I have done searches and have never come up with Manning McComb before. I think that is a likely dealer, either original sale or possibly a resale. Now what are the chances of Illinois giving me any previous owner title history? California certainly wouldn't.

Thanks to Roger's tip, I'm one step closer to learning the history of my 66. I researched the history of the Jim McComb Chevrolet dealership in Peoria through the Illinois Secretary of State website and it showed the dealership having been in business since 1962. Since it's unlikely that there were two chevy dealerships with the McComb name in Peoria during the 60's, I felt pretty certain that Manning McComb changed it's business name to Jim McComb Chevrolet. Today, I called the Jim McComb Chevrolet dealership in Peoria and they confirmed that they were one and the same. Unfortunately, they don't keep any sales records for more than 7 years. Another dead end.
I still don't know if the car was sold new there or a resale but somehow the car went to California sometime before 1972.
Here's a pic of the mylar decal on the backside of the glovebox door.

I think it would have an M-22 if the car was anything special. However, you never know. I would continue talking with that dealer's people. Ask for names of old timers, and get their current locations. (One time, I found that a former employee was still around, then talked with him. Also in IL, but not this town.)

More comments should be expected here on ncrs.org also. There has to be someone in NCRS who knows of this dealer, and possibly someone who worked there.

In contrast, much has been written about that little place in Laharpe, IL that sold COPO Chevys. That's not too far south of Peoria...

                Cecil,
Maybe Tom is on to something. Your car started out over at Fred Gibb Chevrolet at LaHarpe, ILL, then got traded in at Manning-McComb where it picked up the decal on the glove box door. Lots of SPECIAL and ONE OFF Chevrolets and Corvettes went through Fred Gibb Chevrolet!!! That dealership sponsored several national drag race cars and others.

                    Tom,
Thanks for the link. I had tried to get to the dealer history and photos part of the website, but all I got was a 404 error.
It seems that there is little to no info on history of Fred Gibbs dealership before 1967.
I am planning a trip back to the midwest in June, so I will take a little side trip to Peoria and Laharpe to see what I can dig up. Just might get lucky.
