The original engine bay to my old eyes looks like dark orange, not the dark red I remember from 56 engines - I mean like blood red.

Main thing I guess John has cleared up the draft tube issue. Black it is.

'57 pass car 265 cu in was painted yellow.

I once had a "discussion" with a mechanic who worked at a Chevy dealership in '57 over the color of the 265 engines. He insisted to me they were green. In my years of junque yardde prowling, I've seen one green engine, but I didn't check the numbers nor did I pull the pan to check the bore.

Oh, and the reason that mechanic and I were having that discussion is that I have a '57 265 that is and has always been orange, just like the 283s. His claim was that, because it wasn't green it couldn't be a 265.

The subtlety in all this is that my 265 was produced in August '57 and, to the best of my knowledge, only the early 265s were green (or perhaps yellow?).

OK, back to Corvettes now....
