I just cleaned off the passenger side fire wall to locate the job number. Is anyone good at reading the markings? It looks like it must be 174 I'm pretty sure about the one and the four but the seven is tough to read. Did the number go on before the blackout? It would appear that way.

That is your job number for sure. You might find it on the car somewhere else too, possibly in the rear panels. I can't make out the numbers for sure from the photo. Neat find !Tom Hendricks

look under the dash pads on either drivers side or passenger side for this job number. you may even see a written date their also. look at the bulkhead forward of where the gas cap is. and finally remove either R or L door panel and vapor barrier to see the numbers here.Jim Lennartz - FWIW

Glad that picture isn't on my driver's license exam. I never saw that on my 63, even with the heater box off, so it must have been pre-blackout. I have a crazy yellow crayon marking on my left front head surface that could be interpreted as a lazy "O" or a script "8". Some day I hope to figure that out too, but have not looked into it for 45 years - no hurry.

Often times the job number below the heater case is covered with primer or blackout. It just depends on the angle of spray when the vertical section of the firewall is primed/painted.
The job number was put on the floor pan when it was still in a pile next to the beginning of the body line.
The same job number may appear on the end of a cyl head. Also, the engine code suffix will appear on the end of a cyl head. (RE in your case)- Top

Thanks, great information. Guess I never thought about it much as it has always been there (front of head).
Anxious to get some seat time in again soon. Wasted lots of cooler weather doing the heart thing. I had a 10# restriction for lifting/pushing, etc. That's when you wish you had power brakes and steering, Ha! When you can't drive, you don't feel like doing much else with the car either. Last thing discovered on my last drive was the oil gauge leaking again and I have to deal with that first b4 I drive.

Did you replace the oil line fitting last time?
When you feel up to a long drive, I'll let you know next time we plan a trip to the big cruisein at Chic-Fil-a (spl) in Brooksville. We usually have about 5 or 6 63-67 cars from around here and several from around the county. I think Chuck Miller would go and maybe we can get Jorjorian from Orlando too.- Top

Yes, I did replace the fitting at the gauge last summer and it seemed to be holding well. But, my last drive included a long wind session where the gauge (w/the 15w-40) was nearly pegged for a sustained period. Upon return to my garage, I felt the oil on the E-brake handle - just as before. Checking further, it was wet on the bottom lip of the cluster below the gauge. Guess it is the bourdon tube as I suspected in the mid-70's when I disconnected it. I still have a replacement gauge that I bought from a salvage yard back then, but I will have to change the face and needle from my original. I'm not much good at that (have trouble even lacing my shoes, Ha!).
I will do a mapquest on was it Brookline or Brookville. The last Chick Fil A I went to in the Florida mall had run out of Chicken, Ha!

Looks like a 174 to me too. My job number has a "7" in it as well, and the top of the 7 drops down the left side of the digit REALLY far, almost so that it looks like a 9.Chris Enstrom

I found the letters "BLACK" written on the luggage stop in green crayola, behind the passenger seat for my black/red '63.- Top
