    1965-66 Muncie question

    My 1960 came with a Muncie (M-20 I believe) with cast # 3851325, side cover 3831707 and tail 3857584.

The date is P0401. Is this April 1st ?

Is it correct for a 65 or 66 Corvette ?

Why would the VIN not be stamped on it ? Was it likely an over the counter transmission ?

The date is for either a '61 year model car, or '71, if my memory is correct on dating the Muncies...

Could be OTC. Are you sure no VIN derivative stamping on top edges (forward LH or RH, or back LH/RH) ? The 325 maincase was used in 1964 and '65. The square bolt boss on top middle rear of maincase indicates it was cast after Nov. of 1964. The P0401 indicates assembled April 1st (1965). Looks like a '584" tailhousing, which was introduced in 1965 model year and up.

Wayne - the RH side has the P0401 stamp and there is nothing on the LH side. It is a 584 tail housing.

Those are definitely the right numbers for a 1965 Corvette, but not a '66 when the main case casting changed.

65 Corvette or (more likely) pass car or over the counter. Not all pass cars got a VIN stamp on the trans, seemed to vary by plant, but look on the top of the mounting ears and other places like that.
