1971 Stamp Pad Question

Looking at a 1971 big block with a strange stamping.

It is C119116*** T0423CPJ

The "9" should be an "S"

Everything else seems OK.

Is this likely to be a factory error?

Look at the transmission stamp, they should be identical, stamped by the same person using the same tool.

Off topic, but are stampings on blocks and transmisions done by one person by hand or using some type of jig? I've read threads that talk about irregular stampings and I wondered if that's why. Thanks!

If you mean are they stamped by a person with a (large) hammer, yes, but at least in the later years, the numbers were in a gang holder so all the VIN characters were stamped at once. The engine plant process was a little different and there are a lot of discussions on that in the archives.
