    Idle Solenoid questions

Ok you Idle solenoid trivia buffs, I have a few questions about the different year solenoids. First I have done several 69's with M-40 which had only one terminal but this solenoid pictured has 2 terminals and 2 vacuum ports I am assuming it is for 70 or 71 up with smog/TCS control. This one I know has the quadrajet mounting bracket. I just want to be sure off the application before it is offered.

    Thanks, Rich

    Re: Idle Solenoid questions

That's the "1-year only" Delco Remy 1114444 CEC solenoid used in 1971. It combines the two functions of emission control (switching vac advance to the distributor + curb idle RPM) into a single relay. That's why there are two nipples on the vac port (engine vac in and vac out to the distributor).

You can read more about this unique emission system in my article recently published in the Spring 2009 edition of Restorer Magazine...

      Jack:

The CEC solenoid I have on my 71 doesn't have the long nipples. It has a square plastic piece with the two short nipples inside. Which one was correct for the corvette?

        Paul,

See attached picture of my '71 valve. It is original to my July build car.

I'll bet it looks familiar. I had a second, better, picture but the system will not allow it.

          Ken:

That's exactly what mine looks like.

Not to beat this to death, but I think Rich's is the same too, except the plastic housing on the rear is missing.

              Ken,

You are right from what I have seen / heard the plastic cover is snap on and missing on mine.

Jack - is that a "1-year only" Corvette or Chevy (i.e., used in other models)? My curiosity stems from looking for the idle solenoid bracket for my '69. My hope is that is was used on other models increasing my chances of finding one.

                Thanks,

                Pat

                  Re: Idle Solenoid questions

If you read my article in Restorer, your question will be answered... 1971 was the kick-off year for tougher 50-State emissions regulation by the Federal government. The CEC was introduced by Chevy as a late breaking development and much of the documentation (printed prior to model year change over) is wrong/incorrect.

Just crack your copy of the 1971 Chassis Service Manual and you can read all about the CEC system as it was used on all Chevrolet models as the means to comply with Federal statues.

Next, as others have pointed out, the 1114444 CEC solenoid pictured in this thread is aged/damaged. There was no 'long/short' nipple version of the part. The one depicted has suffered the toll of age & handling abuse with its translucent plastic guard/cover deteriorated/missing.

On the issue of this '71-only part, I don't see ANY connection to what you're looking for in terms of a '69 idle stop solenoid...

The two parts are COMPLETELY different, installed with different brackets, had different electrical pin-outs and bolted to their respective brackets with different size nuts. But, YES, the '68 and '69 solenoids were used on other Chevy cars and you CAN find used originals on scrap yard A/C equipped cars.

BUT, the most common version you'll find out there is a base engine, 2-Bbl carb, Chevy and while the solenoid is the same, the mounting bracket is totally different from what was used on QJet and/or Holley tri-power engines...
