Time, patience, chemical stripper, and 220 wet/dry paper.
I used a PPG paint stripper available at the time to strip down to the red oxide primer. Once you hit that primer, the stripping process goes to near zero speed. To neutralize the stripper, I washed each working area (3-4 sq ft) well with soap and water, then wiped it down lacquer thinner (vice-versa?). I wet sanded the red primer off with 220 grit paper.
I can't take credit for the process I followed...one of our LONG TIME members wrote it up in an article in the The Corvette Restorer. I know his name as well as my own, but I'm beginning to have trouble remembering mine...I do remember he lived in Thousand Oaks, CA.
