This article appeared on AOL news this morning. it suggests among other things that the Corvette may be the next vehicle to get the axe at GM. Never thought I'd see something like this. Sad days indeed. Rich

These days, I'll never say never, but I would sure like to think the American sports car is safe. Let's hope so.

Everyone thought GM was "safe" too. Too many times we almost lost Corvette. Nothing, and I mean nothing is scared.

Bureaucrats and CEO Obama own 50% of GM and will now only make Hybrid cars. Do you really think they wont people driving Corvettes? ( get real) Corvette is DEAD and GONE and I have a $100.00 bill saying it's over by the end of next year.

This government interference will only lead to the purchase of more foreign controlled performance vehicles from manufacturers not controlled by this "Obamamaniac" regime. I almost wish that Hillary was the Prez!!!

....Exactly....people will always buy performance cars, even if none are made in the USA. Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi will eat this up and make plenty of $$$.

I have a question. What would have happened if he government had not stepped in? It looks to me like GM was headed for bankruptcy and all that entails. Do you think the Corvette would have survived a chapter 7 or 11?. Just wonderng out loud.

Short of GM's total recovery the best thing that could have happened was bankruptcy with no government interference. Once the government gets involved . Look at social security, medicare, etc. Obama will try to force us to buy cars we don't want--tiny, unsafe vehicles that cost twice as much. I agree there will always be a demand for high performance cars--so people will either buy foreign cars or have to buy old sports cars and restore them. I hope I never see the day that they stop producing corvettes but maybe it will look like a corvette but have a motorcycle engine in it-0 to 60 in 60 seconds--WOW that will give you a real thrill.

Maybe we should have sold the plans to make the A Bomb to Japan and let them beat us in 1945. You think Japan would have rebuilt our economy ? Maybe we'd now be on top 54 years later.

Just think of it this way; with Police driving "Smart" type cars, they won't stand a chance in hell of catching us in our Vettes. Yah, I know. They'll just outlaw us and, if that's the case, they better take our guns first. Right now, they are the only thing standing between us and a totalitarian state. Checks and balances, Ha! The founding Fathers never figured on on the possibility of their being such a dedicated Progressive Democratic bunch taking over the country like this. They didn't think that true God fearing men had it in them. They were wrong.

I just returned from Nashville picking up my son from Vanderbilt and we made a stop at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. There were 5-6 cars in the delivery area, including a ZR1. The museum staff I talked to were all very concerned about the 'Vette's future and the impact it would have on the museum due to its' proximity to the assembly plant which attracts tours of both facilities. The production schedule for the next several months is not at all on pace from previous years and may be revised downward depending on sales. Never thought I would experience such drastic change in the auto industry during my lifetime. I'm really hoping Roy's post and $100 wager is wrong, but unfortunately I am being led to believe that is the way things will come down. I keep telling my wife and boys I'll be 60 in January, and if it means I'll just drive used American cars the rest of my life so be it...

Well, not exactly. The BIG problem is that NOBODY is buying ANYTHING! They don't know if they're going to have a job tomorrow, and that weighs heavily if you're worried about being able to buy food for your kids and make the mortgage payment. I'm not concerned about GM surviving; GM will come out of this lean, mean and very competitive.

I talked yesterday with the Sales Manager at my local Chevy dealer about buying a new Chevy Silverado (Invoice less $4000 rebate from GM...what a deal!). She blames Roger Smith for the contract concessions that got GM into this mess...(Ah, dam, another reason to hate the memory of ole Roger ). The other thing she said was that GM was arrogant in the past...if you didn't like what they were selling, or you were PO'ed about the quality of build and/or service, their attitude was you could eat "cake".

The Chevy dealer also has a Honda dealership right next door; She said the Honda dealership sales were down more than the Chevy dealership...I think the number was like 16-17%. Last quarter, Toyota had an operating loss for the first time since they started in business...sixty years. Now Toyota is closing plants and slimming down just like the Big Three. We can't blame the Nips for this...even if they did build better cars than GM for three decades, and stole a huge chunk of GM's market share.
