I am trying to install and route the hood release cables on my 58 but I am not sure on the proper routing for the two cables. I can't go by the removed state as it was a mess. I was told that one of the conduits runs straight through the firewall and connects to the driver side release mechanism (this is obvious and makes sense). The second conduit apparently (as I was told) runs inside the car like a 62 and exits into the engine compartment somewhere at the passenger side heater box area and then connected to the release latch on that side. The assembly manual is not very clear on this so I am hoping someone out there can provide me with some gudeance. I would appreciate any assistance on the conduit routing and any photos that I can be used to clearly show the proper routing, either inside under the dash or if the cable runs outside in the engine compartment does it go over or under the steering column. The car is an Apr 58 built if that matters. Thanks. Steve Bell 67kramer@rogers.com

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi there, I have a May 58 and this is how my cables run and this is what I would suggest. Do you have the firewall insulation? The repro insulation has all the holes in the correct spots which will give you a hint. Also it is a bear to do after you have run all your cables, so do it first. The diver side is a straight line through the fire wall, the hole should be a bit oval as the grommet is. The passenger side comes through the fire wall on my car at the 1/2 moon cut out point on the driver side. It runs low across the driver side and where it come to the transmission mound the hole is located. It runs under the wiper motor area almost parallel with the engine block . There is a fiberglas join in the spot I am describing (it wil be just above that spot) It will be lower than the radio shielding if you have it. You should have clips or holes in the firewall which would have held the cable. This is a very straight run and it curves up to the hood latch. I did alot of research on this at the time but wait for other replies to confirm.

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi, I was wondering if you have the 'short' lever style or 'long' lever style female hood catches? 58's had 2 ways of routing the cables, early, and late like 59 cars. What is the serial number of the 58? Which length cable arm is being used?

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi Dan, Thanks for your interest n helping. I am not sure what style of lever I have but if I were guessing I would assume "short". The catches are reproductions purchased from CC. The VIN of our car is J58S104942. Thanks. Steve- Top

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi Steve, I looked at my car and I have rubber grommets on both tubes coming off the heater core. The one was from CC made for that application. The second one that you are talking about I used a generic CC firewall grommet that comes in their kit and I made the hole bigger. I can not say that this is correct but I know when I took the car apart there was a grommet there. The second question about the cable. On my car I have it running down the emergency brake and turning to the passenger side going over the brake, clutch and gas pedal. It just lays there as when it hooks up to the hood release there is not a lot of cable left. It does not get in the way of the pedals. If you look at the firewall insulation there is the top rubber for the middle piece of insulation. If you come down from there, there is a small hole. that is where the cable passes into the engine compartment. (Note I have not used that hole I ran the cable behind the insulation as it just looks neater) But that hole should on your car close to that location, then it runs a natural line to the latch. Make sure there are no hard bends it should arc easy up to the latch. Hope this helps. Also glad to see more 58's on the go, there is not a lot of talk about 58's of late.......Susan- Top

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi Steve, the short levers are square cut on the ends, have a reinforcement strap to help hold the cable leading to it. The passenger cable routes through the firewall behind the accelerator lever into the engine compartment, accross the top of the tunnel and has a clip to hold it against the firewall, then up to the passenger lever. It is sealed with putty at the firewall exit. This type does not come through the heater core as later 58 and 59 cables did. Look for the hole behind the throttle lever if it truly is an early 'short' lever model.

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Hi Don, Our # are close. Ours has had a long and happy life, the previous owner had it for 33 years and lives 15 minutes away yet i had never seen the car before purchasing it a year and a half ago. It has never been off the frame and I decied it did not really need that level of restoration. It's a going to be a "driver" as a lot of the important original parts are long gone but I still like things to look right. It's got a 65 motor a 62 trany, it has retained is orginal exterior blue color but the coves are white and the dash is black, was blue as well. I have a complete new Al Knock white interior and a new white top. The ol bias ply WW and restored caps make it look era correct. It will be a fun car. Steve- Top

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
I couldn't agree with you more Dan!
Speaking of details, and not to get off topic, but I've been "dinged" at every meet over my gas cap because it's the one pictured in the J/G as "early '58". They tell me my car is too late to have that cap present. Interesting enough, last August at Carlisle, there was an unrestored '58 fuelie sn 4795 that had that "early style" cap (see pic). Mine appears to be original, and the second owner said it was the cap that was there when he got it from owner number one. Just curious Steve on what cap is on your '58?
I'm convinced it's original so I'm not changing it based upon the judges opinions; just trying to gather information to make my case to the T/L the next time around.
Thanks!

Re: Request Looking for Routing Details for a 58 Hood Release Cable
Going thru some old photos (before I made "improvements" to NCRS specs) I found a couple shots of the area I think Susan was refering too.
Going from memory, I think those are the cables going thru the insulation under the fuse box. Then note in the engine compartment where they come out; one up and the other heading behind the engine. Again as a disclaimer, I've replaced the incorrect master cylinder and detailed the clutch arm to what's called out in the J/G; I just had these on my PC. If need be, I can check tomorrow with any questions.

Re: 58 Numbers
A friend just purchased 1958 s/n . . . . . 81. It is a driver, I think he thought it would be a little better than it was when it arrived at his house from e-bay, but he will make it a much better car in a short time. I enjoy looking at the s/n #'s.
As few of the early cars as there were, I'm surprised that we don't see more 'close numbers'.David Dawdy- Top
